Boa hora aquela em que Bill Callahan resolveu deixar de assinar os seus discos sob a designação de Smog (com ou sem parênteses). É o que o rapaz libertou-se não apenas da onda low-fi (que já enjoa), como começou a investir muito mais no arranjo das suas canções. Não é por isso de espantar que SOMETIMES I WISH WE WERE AN EAGLE seja o seu melhor disco até à data, isto até editar o próximo que, estou certo, confirmará que o rapaz está numa daquelas curvas que malta engravatada gosta de referir como ascendente. O novo álbum é variado qb, aventura-se por sonoridades mais exóticas («Rococo Saphyr») e até traz algumas novidades no registo que Callahan habitualmente utiliza para colocar a sua voz («All Thoughts Are Prey To Some Beasts»). Mas num disco repleto de motivos para o elogio descontrolado (um dos passatempos preferidos), o destaque vai para «Eid Ma Clack Shaw» (calma), um tema que poderia ter sido gravado por estoutro grande doido que é o Kevin Ayers, tal é a economia cirúrgica dos arranjos. E depois, que raios, entra-se aqui em contacto com uma nova língua ou, se preferirem, com a língua naquilo que de mais poética ela pode ter que é o puro significante. Esqueçam lá as línguas das populações fantásticas de Tolkien, o Newspeak de Orwell, a linguagem transmental de Chelbnikov ou as invenções satíricas de Rabelais e Foigny - e passem-se com este songspeak onírico de Bill Callahan.
